  • Click on the profile to sign and you will be signed into your profile, your Microsoft Xbox gamertag will be recovered and all the data would be visible again.

  • Visit Xbox.com on your web browser.
  • Click on your profile picture on top right.

Here’s how to recover the Xbox Gamertag on an Xbox 360 Console

There are two ways of recovering your username/tag. The first way is through your Xbox Live online account. If you haven’t ever linked it with an online account, fret not! There’s an offline way also to recover your gamertag.

Using Xbox 360 console (Online)

  • Press the Xbox button on your controller. This will open up the Xbox Guide Menu. Once you are on this screen, sign out of your profile. (Press the blue X button on your controller to sign out of any signed-in accounts)
  • A new menu will appear, and right under the create profile menu, you will have an option that reads, “Recover Gamertag”. Ensure your console is connected to the internet at this point.
  • Once you select the Recover gamertag option, you will be asked to sign into your Xbox profile and you will be asked for your account credentials.
  • Once your credentials are successfully validated, the following message will pop up – ‘Downloading Profile. Please Wait’.
  • Depending on the data linked with your gamertag, it could take anywhere between a few minutes, to about half an hour for Xbox to recover everything linked with your gamertag to your Xbox 360 console.
  • Once your Xbox gamertag recovery is successfully completed, you will see the following message on your screen – ‘The account has been recovered to the console. You can now use it to sign in to Xbox Live’.

Using Xbox 360 console (Offline)

A lot of Xbox data can be backed up to a USB drive or any other storage. You will need this drive to recover your gamertag and all other data that is linked with it. Make sure you use a storage drive that is compatible with your 360 console or one that you have used before with your console. Additionally it would help if the data is copied somewhere else too. A lot of USB drives need formatting on first use so your console is able to read the data on the drive.

Once this is taken care of, follow the steps below to recover your Xbox Gamertag.

  • Plug in your USB drive or your storage device into your Xbox console.
  • Visit the ‘System Settings’ section and select the ‘Memory Unit’ you have plugged into your console.
  • Once you have accessed the Memory Unit, select the Game Profile Folders.
  • Select the profile you want to move, and the drive you want to move it to. Once you have done this, you should be able to load your preferred profile from your storage drive.
